In the Carew murder case murder case, there is a brutal event in London where a woman calls the police at 2 a.m because of a killing. It had been the murder of Sir Danvers Carew. "It was two o'clock when she came to herself and called for the police. The murderer was long gone ago; but there lay his victim in the middle of the lane, incredibly mangled." This symbolizes everything that the novel is about. It represents human nature, the conscience, good vs. evil, and the strong desire of something. We have all had moments where we want to do something very badly but we must do what is right which in Jekyll's case can be related because he goes through this conflict. On page 57 Jekyll says, "But the temptation of a discovery so singular and profound at last overcame the suggestions of alarm". Jekyll was tempted by deciding to take the drug again or not.
Jekyll and Hyde are two in one. However this is not confirmed until the last chapter; Jekyll writes his full statement claiming that he drank the potion that turned him into Hyde. The symbol represents the concept of opposites, being that Jekyll and Hyde are the same they are still the opposite both physically and mentally.
